What's is an
Heirloom Seed?
We carry both open
pollinated seeds (you can save your own seeds from the best
specimens and sow them again) and hybrids (you need to buy
new seeds each year as the seeds are hand-crossed from different
parents to get specific qualities from each so you won’t get the
same thing when you sow them). The term heirloom
means an
open pollinated seed variety that isn’t common on the commercial
seed market, and has been saved by families or communities for at
least 50 years rather than purchased. This definition is a little
blurry these days, because consumers are asking for
heirloom varieties, and so commercial seed producers are growing
them for the seed trade now -- which is why you see many more
heirlooms in seed packets and in stores.
