Time to Plant a Second Season Garden

The planting months of late summer are perfect for sowing seeds of short season varieties which tolerate cooler nights and shorter days and provide tasty fall harvests. We call this "Second Season Gardening". Read this month's feature article Gardening for a Second Season for planting information and our list of what to grow.

For fall planting suggestions, also refer to our Kitchen Garden Designs for both short and long season areas.

Mila, our Ass't. Trial Gardener,
with the hollyhock trials

In the Trial Garden

It's a very busy time in the trial garden, with many plantings ready for consideration. This year we are evaluating new hollyhocks, dwarf foxglove, peppermint from seed, chocolate flowers, godetia, hanging basket cherry tomatoes, and a purple and green kolrabi mix.

Seed Suggestions Welcome!

We expand our seed line every year, and look for new varieties as well as old fashioned favorites to grow out and evaluate in our trial gardens in different climate zones. If there is a particular variety you would like us to carry, email us at gardening@reneesgarden.comand tell us why you recommend it.
