While the weather is miserably cold and wet in our
northern California location, there are still things to do in the trial
garden. All the different new color combinations of California poppies
and sweet peas we seeded last October and November are ready for
thinning before they get too crowded. We have found rigorously thinning
these seedlings allows plants enough room to grow to their full size and
bloom abundantly over a longer period. We thin out California poppies to
4-6 inches apart and sweet peas to stand 6 inches apart.
We have also sown several early spring flower seeds in our greenhouse:
Stock ‘Ten Week Bouquet’
,
Snapdragons ‘Chantilly’and
Heliotrope ‘Deep Marine’ are
all easy to grow, colorful and fragrant varieties that will look lovely
when planted in the landscape later this season. |
