Luxury from the Garden

The jewel-like fruits of Alpine strawberries (Fragaria Vesca Sempervirens) are a special delicacy you can enjoy every summer. They grow in tidy mounds perfect for pots or edging pathways and borders, covering themselves with little white flowers with gold centers which soon turn to tiny red fruit about the size of a thimble, and produce all summer long, right up to frost.

Our variety is called "Mignonette" which is popular in France and Holland, but little known here. It has an intensely concentrated flavor with a taste that seems to combine the essence of strawberries, roses and pineapples. A truly sublime treat.

In the Trial Garden

Trial managers Lindsay and Mila are in the process of direct sowing a wide array of colorful spring crops. There are nasturtiums in different new color combinations, colored carrots in lots of hues to grow and taste, new varieties of baby lettuces and golden beets from a small American breeder, innovative purple-stemmed Pac Choi and dark purple mustard from Japan, French shelling peas, baby Napa cabbages from Taiwan, new Italian salad leaf mixes and some exceptionally disease resistant American baby spinach.

We drip irrigate the trial garden, so it's always a chore to make sure all the tape is in good shape and properly positioned. Lindsay has grafted some Bosc pears on our Asian pear fruit tree and we planted a self-pollinating sour cherry tree and a new weather resistant apricot. I'm hoping this will mean lots of jam in the future!
