In the Trial Garden

This month in the trial garden, we have just begun to harvest the first round of quick growing spring greens. We are excited about a “Cut and Come Again” Mustard mix which is a blend of four different mustards varieties with different forms and textures and tastes. It is very mild in flavor and great as a salad and perfect for stirfry. Also on the menu are several new mesclun mixes. From one of our favorite Italian vendors, we have a fantastic mix of heirloom lettuces almost ready to harvest that is sure to be delicious. Along with our salad greens, we have cute bright pink little round radishes that are ready for harvest in about 30 days, and are both mild and uniform. We just finished choosing the best tasting of three different varieties of these crunchy pink beauties.

We are also beginning to plant warm season crops here in our California trial garden. We will be growing 4 different varieties of sweet white corn, pole and bush beans, new colored carrots, and many other comparison trials. We are directly sowing seeds for new color combinations of zinnias and nasturtiums that are sure to be dazzling in the garden.

May is Grow a Farmer Month
For over 40 years, the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food program at UC Santa Cruz has been cultivating farmers and gardeners who learn to grow and market fresh delicious organic food while caring for the land and communities in which they work. To date, Apprentices from across the US and around the world have lived on-site in their own tents, but the University will no longer allow this after 2009. Housing plans are shovel-ready, but funds are insufficient. The Grow a Farmer Campaign is enlisting the help of farm-loving businesses, restaurants, organizations, and individuals to meet this unprecedented fundraising challenge.
